I performed an 8 hour battery test to determine how quickly the battery drains while playing a playlist of online videos at 1080p30. I had both the higher end MiniLED variant as well as the IPS model (this one from BestBuy) paired against each other in the test. At the end of the test, the IPS model still had hours of runtime left at 34% whereas the MiniLED had only 14% left. Extrapolating with the 90Whr battery, we could see upwards of 13+ hours on this model vs only 8-9 in this workload on the MiniLED model.
Noting here for anyone curious that both panels were kept at a minimally acceptable viewing brightness (around 50%), matched in brightness. Both were in Silent with the graphics set to Eco mode (disables Nvidia graphics completely), as well as having the CPU minimum performance state set to 0% in Windows power profile settings. Both systems were running no background apps or services, and the test was conducted in the Edge browser on the same exact playlist.
Overall, with some very tiny tweaks (all you need to do is tweak the power plan) the battery you get out of this model crushes just about anything of similar performance. With a 3070ti, this laptop would be a true godsend. Unfortunately there’s no option for that, but if there was, I’d recommend it easily with the IPS panel.
Worth note that the only difference between the IPS and MiniLED panels are the backlight tech and some of the internal filtering done inside of the panel for the backlighting. The color accuracy, coverage, vibrancy, and response times are identical otherwise as far as I was able to determine.
Included a run of Timespy as well as Tomb Raider on full max settings (no DLSS, no RTX, native, DX12) for anyone interested in performance figures. This model is certainly slower than the 3070ti model, but the amount varies depending on the game and your settings of course. This is going to be one of the best performing 3060 laptops on the market with 125w of TGP available (the same as the 3070ti model), so don’t underestimate it.
I’m still working on my testing of this laptop, but as far as I can tell my units flawless and rips through my testing like a champ. Easy recommendation from me if you can swallow the price.

If this is what you’re looking for, the market is slim. And your success rate will be slimmer. I’ve been through 2 HP Spectres in 3 years, each burnt out from terrible cooling. I thought I was in the clear when this device had the most magnificent cooling I’ve seen and incredible battery life, a QHD display, and speed I need.
But roughly a week of usage in, and I’ve watched the computer crash on me not once or twice, but 5 times. 4 of the 5 times I was running basic tasks – just basic homework in Canvas on Google Chrome – when the device suddenly went black and I was hit with the boot animation. The laptop was whisper quiet and perfectly cool before the sudden error message-less crash, yet it shut off inexplicably.
Finally, a fifth time, it shut off during a competitive match of Overwatch that my last laptop (an MSI GS66 that I returned solely for the buggy keyboard on almost every unit) with similar specs (an i7 instead of an R9 and DDR4 16GB instead of DDR5) and the same graphics card handled expertly. This laptop is BAD in practice. This issue is underdocumented but has been plaguing AMD-based units apparently for over 2 years with no response from AMD and no comment from ASUS. Some said uninstall some of the native ASUS software and it’ll solve it and it only made it less frequent.
I shouldn’t have to lose your software to reduce crashes. I had a lot of respect for ASUS before this purchase because of a good laptop of theirs in the past. I was wary of AMD before this because of their reputation in the past, but this is the nail in the coffin for both brands for me.

This is a really special machine. I got it because it’s the no-compromise laptop. Expandable ram? eGPU? Touchscreen? Great speakers? It has it all. The RTX 3060 is the 130w version, which means it runs fantastic at 1440p. I also believe this is the best cooled laptop on the market (in tent mode). Pen support is also very good for fellow artists out there.
I really love this laptop and I wish I had kept it. But I ended up returning because:
1) Price. The eGPU is insanely expensive – you could build a mini-ITX desktop for the same price, and get much better performance without QC issues and jet-engine fans.
The 3060 is perfectly capable of gaming on a 16″ screen — so if your goal is to plug in the eGPU to boost graphics, you are realistically paying $1500 for slightly less fan noise.
2) Support. There is no promise from ASUS about how long they will be making the eGPUs. So don’t be disappointed if this is the last XG mobile product.
3) Clunky-ness. There is no way I can use it as a 2kg, 16″, thick tablet. You have to be super careful when flipping the keyboard around, because if you accidentally press a key, it stays pressed. In addition, it’s very hard to use since said keyboard becomes completely innacessable. Buttons are too small for a touchscreen, so you have to scale all the menus up if you don’t have a stylus pen.
In addition, the laptop loves to ignore it’s auto-rotate setting. My idea was to dock it, put it in tent mode, and have a desktop replacement. Occasionally I would use it as a drawing tablet. But everytime I flipped it into a different mode, I have to go in the settings to flip the screen manually — only to have it reset after every sleep / reboot. I ended up never using the 2 in 1 features because of the hassle.
4) Lack of love. ASUS’s QC is a total joke: one of the hinges was lose, the laptop’s sleep mode is totally broken, and the keyboard lighting is far from uniform. ASUS Armory Crate is very buggy.
5) Where are the premium features? This keyboard feels like the cheapest rubber-dome keys I’ve had. My old $300 Toshiba had better keys, right next to my $500 Lenovo. The GAMER font on the keycaps is unbelievably ugly and hard to read.
Huge thumbs down for not including a stylus pen.
But hey, they do include some cardboard that you fold into a laptop stand. This sounds like a joke, but I ended up using it all the time since it get super hot when flat on a table / lap. It’s called a laptop: it’s supposed to work on your lap! It feels like a slap in the face for an essential accessory to be cardboard oragami.
Yes, I’m making a big deal about little things. I could have tried to fix the sleep issue. I could have sent it to ASUS to fix the hinge. I could have downloaded an auto-rotate program. I could have used a Bluetooth keyboard, and bought a nicer stand. But I didn’t spend $2000 to do all that – I want the laptop to work out of the box.
I ended up getting a legion 7 slim on sale. No suprise, everything works fine (including the sleep mode) and it works great on my lap. I miss the beautiful touchscreen, but it’s not worth the $800 difference.
I would reccomended this laptop to mobile gamers and / or enthusiasts. Y’all have time to fix the problems. But for people who need a reliable workstation, look elsewhere.

I have had many laptops over the past 3 years, ranging from a 3050ti-3080ti (always max-p).
This laptop so far has been awesome, not only do you have a greater connection speed for an e-gpu via XG Mobile, you also get the dock, and you can easily disconnect to move this laptop around.
I was having issues finding a desktop type replacement laptop that wasn’t too heavy, could more easily take a USB C charge and not be a brick, so far this laptop has been great.
In regards to the laptop, I wish Ryzen/Asus would offer more cores via Ryzen, I hope the 7000 series Ryzen chips they offer 12+core options, then and only then will this laptop be 5 Start Quality. I have found the only thing holding back this laptop really is the CPU in terms of what I use it for in regards to work and gaming.
Upgrades:
1. 32GB Ram 4800mhz Samsung
2. 2TB pcie 4.0 SSd
3. 1TB microsd leftover from a steam deck
I have plenty of storage, and it doesn’t seem to have any issues with accessing that easily when having several applications open.
One issue I have found though is when I have many applications open there can be some lag, which generally is from the CPU due to processing, hence my comment about more cores.
Overall I would recommend this product, I love the display that they finally upgraded with more nits and the finish is an OLED feel, on it’s own it does really well especially with DLSS with the 3060. Battery life is actually surprisingly great – I had it unplugged for around 6 hours and it was only halfway drained, this is amazing for a 16″ laptop. When you plug it into for instance my XG Mobile 6850XT M you get awesome power because of the all AMD system (FSR through software for any game), and the dock does super awesome because it doesn’t cross into the PCIEx8 connector for the eGPU. I would place 5/5 stars but it’s the CPU for me and I hope to see a 12 core minimum CPU for the next model.
FYI thermals for me stay around 70C for the CPU, 80C for the 6850m egpu when under load. If I use my custom fan pad I stay around 65C for the CPU under load.
