After doing a lot of research, I decided to get the ROG Zephyrus G14. However, I soon found out that buying this product is like going to Vegas and playing the slot machine. You’ll be gambling and the unit you get will either be a hit or miss.
Yesterday, I went to BestBuy to purchase one unit in store. While setting everything up (Windows update, BIOS update, etc), I hit the black screen and auto shutdown issue that many other people have posted before. I thought I was just one of the unlucky few and went back to BestBuy today to get a second unit. The 2nd unit didn’t have an issue with black screen or auto shutdown but instead had an issue with overheating and the fan not turning on at all, causing the keyboard area to get relatively uncomfortable. Please refer to my attached pictures for more info.
Right now, I’m writing this review as I think about whether or not to try buying a 3rd unit or giving up on Asus. This is my first time buying Asus and I chose this particular model because of the price value relative to Razer and Alienware. However, I think this model might be cheaper for a reason as such horrendous quality control is really something I have never experienced before on a big computer hardware brand.

I really like especially being my first gaming laptop and all. Runs smoothly for the games I play. My only upset is that I’m a week in with the laptop and it’s already starting to show a yellow tint on the corner of the screen. That’s my only issue I have with it and am upset it’s started doing that so early.

Literally the best laptop I’ve ever owned. I use it even more than my desktop with a 3080 cause it’s just so nice to use. Keep it on the Windows profile and you’re set. Amazing battery life, screen, keyboard, etc. Also very thin, light, and compact. Does get hot though. 10/10 would recommend to my mom’s dog.

The Asus Zephyrus G14 120hz is by far the best laptop I ever purchased. It’s sleek design paired along with a AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS and a RX6700S GPU makes it a beast of a laptop. I was fortunate to pick this open box on sale for $985.99, which was a steal!
To start off, the build quality. Asus developers really took their time with this year’s model. It doesn’t feel cheaply made. Display screen, its a QHD display that measures at 16×10 aspect ratio, super fast refresh rate at 120hz, quick response time at only 3ms, super bright and nice color accuracy. This year model even has a built in 720p camera. Really like the keyboard with rgb lighting and track pad, it’s super smooth and the click is quick and responsive. In terms of battery life, I’m getting about 10 hour of run time on eco mode which is pretty good. The speakers on this laptop are amazing, supports dobly atmos. It has 2 micro usb c ports, 2 usb 2.0, 1 HDMI port, 1 TB of nvme storage and 16gb of ddr5 4800mhz ram. I upgraded mines to a 2 TB and 32gb ram.
As for those experiencing heating issues with the CPU and GPU reaching the high 90s. I didn’t have any issues with mines. It’s running at about 32° on idle and didn’t exceed 70°C while gaming. This was tweak using the Registry Editor. This will uncover a hidden power option.
After that, go back in the Power Plan Options and a new tab “Processor Performance Boost Mode” will appear. Set it to Disable and click Apply. Also, make sure your max processor state is at 100%. The CPU will now run on the stock frequency. For a general idea about the performance compared to 99% max state, average fps went up to about 5-15 with the temperatures still maxing out at the same at 65-70°C!! The FPS loss from 99% disabled has been recovered while maintaining the benefit! All games set on high to ultra high settings and still max out the frames at 120fps on some AAA games!

Overall, solid laptop, but it runs a little hot, gets so close to not needing to use a fan when its idling, but still has to turn on every once in a while. Great colors for srgb and sdr content, bright screen, but…
Does not support HDR or P3 color space. Oh, that was a major selling point of the laptop? And it just doesn’t work? Too bad. Windows cannot recognize this device as an HDR display. Can’t display HDR in games like Sekiro, or streaming services like youtube. Dolby Access claims to support this laptop, but just fails to do so. It displays black screens, wrong colors, or just delivers poor, blown out content. I don’t know who screwed up the HDR content, AMD, Asus, Windows, or Dolby, but they do not work together. AMD and Dolby seem to know they should support HDR, but no one else seems to.
I would give this a one star review for false advertisement since a major feature of the laptop is broken. But the rest of the laptop is so great, that doesn’t feel fair. The SDR content looks great. But it can’t do HDR, and that’s a huge problem.
