I really like how this product cleans the air in the room without taking up so much space . I was concern that it was not working correctly at first because it kept staying at 100% for a few days and then i finally started cooking and the smell of the food and some of the smoke got into the room which changed the percent to 30% where the fan kicked on faster to clear the air .

    INTRO:
The Shark Air Purifier MAX with True HEPA (HP202) sets out to be an intelligent air purifier that can self-manage keeping the air clean within a 1200 sq foot area.
    UNBOXING & SETUP:
When you first open the box and remove the first piece of paper egg carton protection, you’ll find the Shark HP202 Air Purifier and a getting started guide. Upon lifting the HP202 of the box, you’ll need to gently turn it upside down, remove a couple peels and remove the bottom door to access the HEPA filter. You’ll need to remove the plastic wrap around the HEPA filter, then reinsert it and securely close the bottom door. Once that is done, you can flip the HP202 upright and plug it into the wall.
One discrepancy I do want to mention is that manuals from Shark indicate there is some sort of Remote Control that can be used with the HP202, but no remote control was provided in the box or advertised from the outside packaging. I think a remote would be a great addition, so it’s disappointing that it does not come with the HP202, and my own research on Shark’s website indicated that none of the remotes they have listed are compatible with the HP202.
    BUILD:
In terms of build, the HP202 is a very plasticky build. It’s a bit disappointing considering the price you are paying, but at least it is lightweight and easy to transport from room to room. The downside here is that I’d be a bit more worried in regard to any incidents where it could potentially tip and fall over if you have very energetic pets or children who accidentally knock it over. So I advise caution in terms of where you place the Shark Air Purifier MAX within your room.
Additionally, there is no pre-filter which means larger particles like hair and dust will be pulled into the HEPA filter and will more quickly reduce the lifespan of the filter. I suspect that this choice was to prevent obstructing the amount of air that could be pulled towards the filter so that they could achieve their 1200 sq ft rating. Adding a pre-filter would cause a change in pressure and would likely reduce airflow.
    CONTROLS:
Upon plugging it in for the first time, the power button light will turn on so you can see where to press to turn it on. Pressing and holding the capacitive power button for a few seconds, the system will turn on and the front display will light up and the control panel on the top will illuminate all of its various capacitive controls.
On the capacitive control panel you’ll find the fan control, an info button to toggle between various air quality stats on the front display, a brightness control, a timer for running the purifier between 1 and 12 hours, a button to show the filter lifespan, and a child lock to prevent accidental touches during operation. Every time you press one of the buttons on the control panel, it makes a chime noise, but you can disable that by pressing and holding the info button and the child lock button together for a few seconds.
In terms of things that Shark could improve upon, I think being able to automatically cycle between the PM1.0, PM 2.5, PM 10, % Clean Air and Time to Clean views during operation might be helpful. That way, at any given time, you might be able to take a glance across the room and see how it’s performing. Since there is no remote control as of writing this review, it is a bit more cumbersome to have to walk up to the HP202 just to cycle through its stats.
    PERFORMANCE:
By default, Shark recommends using the Auto/Eco mode as it will sense when air quality decreases and will adjust the fan speed to pull in the air to purify it. Once the Shark reaches 100% clean mode for 10 minutes, the purifier will enter eco mode where it will wait for the air quality to decrease before ramping up the fans.
During operation at the lowest fan level (1), the fan is very quiet. When my central air is running in my house, I cannot hear the HP202 running unless I am within 1-3 feet of it. When there are no other surrounding noises, the fan is a whisper.
On fan level 2, the fan is certainly more audible, but still more of a relaxing noise. That being said, level 3 and 4 are much more audible and are more necessary for scenarios where the air quality is going to be below average such as high-heat cooking.
While I cannot objectively measure how well the Shark Air Purifier MAX performs, I do think it makes sense that it is marketed towards a larger 1200 sq ft room, as it does have a reasonably large fan and moves quite a bit of air.
While I wouldn’t trust it to dispel larger puffs of dust, I do think that this is great for cleaning up smoke, pet odors and cooking odors.
    CONCLUSION:
The Shark Air Purifier MAX with True HEPA is not the most sophisticated air purifier on the market, but its goal is to focus on cleaning the air in a large room rather than being the smartest air purifier on the market. While it lacks a smartphone app or an included remote control, it isn’t inherently necessary if you leave it in Auto mode so that it can turn on as it sees fit. Operating it is very easy, and it appears to do a decent job at cleaning the air in larger rooms. Compared to many other 1200 sq ft air purifiers, Shark is asking for a much lower price, but also fewer features. So if you’re after something that gets the job done without a ton of bells and whistles, the Shark Air Purifier MAX may be worth considering.

    Initial impressions:
The Shark Air Purifieer Max (P200 model) is a handsome cylinder that stands about 22 inches tall and just shy of 11 inches in diameter. It is just the right size for the floor without being obtuse. But to large to be placed on a desk or dresser. I was surprised by the volume of filter exposed to the outside. Two thirds of the bottom half of the cylinder exposes the filter to the outside. The area of exposure is equivalent to that of a traditional box air filter while only taking up half the floor space.
I like the large LCD display. The numbers are large and easy to read. The illuminated ring may be off putting to some people. This is especially true if you plan on running this in a bedroom. The good news is that there are three lighting levels: high, low, and off. The touch panel is also lit. All the touch settings have backlighting. The lighting levels impact all of the lighting equally with the exception of the power button and the backlight button. To either side of the LCD screen is information about how to read the LCD and the same 3D barcode found on the instruction sheet. I plan on leaving the marketing stickers on the unit. It is useful information. And the presentation of the stickers does not scream “cheap marketing material.”

The unit does a good job of detecting impurities in the air and cycling through the room’s air quickly. For example, this time of year the pollen is so thick that it turns everything yellow. I set the P200 to auto. It detected the levels of pollen in the air and set an appropriate level to reduce that number to zero. In a sealed room, this process was relatively quick. With the window open the P200 would cycle through low and low medium speeds to keep the pollen count within an acceptable range. Obviously with the windows open the count will never be zero.
    Setup:
Setup of the P200 was easy. The unit ships with a simple five step instruction sheet. Each instruction is accompanied by an image. There is also a 3D barcode that will take you to the online instruction manual. Setup took about five minutes. I set the unit about three feet from a wall, plugged it in, set the unit to Auto, and waited a minute for the unit to evaluate the air quality.
    Operation:
On low, this unit is very quiet. There is a very distinct rattle when the fan ramps up from low to low medium. I checked the unit and cannot find anything loose or broken so I figure this is normal operation. The fan does even out when it gets up to speed. The unit will sound like a fan when the fan is set to medium and high. That’s kind of expected given the amount of air the P200 pushes at those speeds. The fan does rattle a bit when ramping up and down between speeds. As before, the rattling ceases once the fan reaches its designated speed.
The unit has two operating modes: Auto and Manual. Pressing the Auto button, or either of the arrows on either side of Auto button, will switch the unit from Auto to Manual. Pressing Auto again will put the unit back into full Auto. Auto mode is tied directly to the air quality sensor. If the air quality is poor then the fan will automatically increase in speed until the sensor detects air quality returning to normal.
For example, the other night my neighbor decided to smoke his tires. It’s late spring so my windows are open. Before I know it the whole house is full of burnt rubber and smoke. Airing out the house is almost never an option because the stink outside the house can linger for hours. I closed the windows, turned the P200 to full auto, and let it do its thing. The P200 detected the fumes, the LED light ring turned Orange, and the % clean air reading dropped below 80%. The fan automatically spun up and worked to cycle the air in the room as quickly as it could. Within a few minutes, air quality levels were detected to be about 90% and continued to increase over the next five minutes. I did have to move the P200 around my home to hit every room. This is mostly due to the layout of my house and not any limitation on of the P200. Overall, the P200 worked performed beyond my expectations.
    Smell:
Yes, this is an important one. I have owned several HEPA rated air purifiers over the years and almost all of them come with a chemical smell that must gas out over time or develop a stink within a few weeks of operation. I have been running the P200 for about a week and so far there is no unnatural smells.
    Filter:
The filter is a HEPA filter so it will clean anything out of the air that is 0.3 microns or larger. That’s the standard. It is not a HEPA filter unless it meets this standard.
    Final Thoughts:
Overall, I am pleased with the Shark Air Purifier MAX (P200). There is the annoying fan rattle when switching between fan speeds. Otherwise, the performance has been great. The filter does not stink. The LCD is big enough to read but not so big as to be obnoxious. The color-coded LCD ring is also a great high-level indicator of air quality for those times when you are not close enough to read the numbers on the screen. The control panel is easy to use. Switching out filters are very quick. The P200 has a handle on each side for easy movement between rooms. I also like that I can turn off the LED and control panel backlighting when they are not needed.
I would recommend the Shark Air Purifier MAX with True HEPA & Microban Antimicrobial Protection to a friend.

The Shark Air Purifier MAX comes equipped with a Microban treated filter and advertises that it can purify a room up to 1,200sqft. It’s easily the biggest air purifier I have ever owned, but it’s relatively quiet operation, excellent filter, and easy to use controls and display, make it an easy recommendation for those looking for a more powerful home air purifier.
    Specs:
    Product dimensions (in.): 10.83″ L X 10.83″ W X 22.47″ H
    Product weight (lbs.): 10.91
    Some things to note:
Shark advertises two replacement filters on their website. One is a Microban filter, and the other is not. The Microban filter runs about $89 and the non Microban filter is $69. The Microban filter is specifically treated to prevent the growth of bacteria on the filter’s surface. Also, both filters are currently a bit hard to get. As I’m writing this, both filters are out of stock on Shark’s website. Shark advertises a 6 to 12 month life expectancy on the filters, but your mileage will obviously vary depending on the existing air quality and how long you are running the fan.
    Experience:
Set up is easy. The purifier is huge, but you must flip the unit over, untwist the bottom of the unit, and unwrap and reinsert the filter into the air purifier. The process is simple and will only take you a few minutes.
The touch controls and the display are easy to use and intuitive. On an Auto setting, the fan goes off after ten minutes of not detecting any particles. But, while running the unit for several days on a low setting, I have noticed that I have already burned through around 4% of my expected filter life in less than a week. I am curious how long this filter will run. The auto setting does work, but by leaving it on Auto, I feel like I am waiting on the sensor to pick up particles. By the time it has picked up dust and other allergens, I have already breathed them in. So, I prefer a low setting on constantly, but that may burn through my filter faster than the estimated filter life span.
On a low fan setting, the purifier is barely audible. On highest settings, the purifier is noticeable, but it’s not “wind tunnel loud”, either. For its size, this is one of the quietest air purifiers that I have tested.
The filter has a color-coded display to correspond to air quality: blue, yellow, and red. Blue is good and during red, the fan will crank up to get air quality back to up 100 percent. So far, I have only had the air quality indicator dip below blue once or twice. One time was on a particularly windy day and the other was when my wife was cooking. Not sure what that says about her cooking, but it tells me that the unit is working and is detecting particles in the air.
    Conclusion:
I like this air purifier. So far it has worked well. I’ve tested it in a couple of locations, and it does seem to actively detect particles and impurities in the air. My major concern is the availability and cost of replacing the filters. Hopefully, Best Buy and Shark can get more filters in stock before its time for a replacement.
